My Gratitude Today

Just ending the day with a focus on my Gratitude. This was a strange couple of days.  I had two houseguests and then two stranded folks showed up so I had a full house yesterday.  Over on Facebook, there were some of my friends who took a convenient shot at my post.  It is kind of interesting that some people would be up in arms if I took their inventory on the basis of their posts as they did of mine.  I am praying for them.  It involved the reality that if you continue to see yourself as victim, you will not get beyond that stance and you become trapped in  your self view.  Victim's do not recover.  I was very tired of hearing the sad tales of people continueing in their victim stances and also hearing people whining about the weather or the lack of men, or the behaviors of others or how unfair and unprincipled certain contacts in their lives were.  I was just sick of it.

I posted: I wish all of you who are so victimized by people, places, and things would tell me how that is working out for you. (It would drive me to do stupid things.)

Man, it brought out some interesting stuff.  One guy bashed the program and implied that my comment was passive aggressive.  Two people thought I was blaming victims.  One guy backbit me with a damaging and true comment.  It was awful.  The program basher dropped all kinds of hostile comments about the dangerous nature of the program.  "Too many playing God for my taste." The interesting thing there was that he was judging it all with such prejudice against the program.

I just extricated myself from the argument with as much poise as I could.  I was not up for the argument and all three men were very angry.  I am praying for each of them.  I don't see any of them as happy and free men.

My Gratitude list helps restore my sanity.

Love the story of the Loaves and Fishes

One of my favorite stories in the New Testament is the Loaves and Fishes.
"And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all."

This story affirms to me that God can take whatever we offer and make a miracle of it.  I love it.

Post Thanksgiving Gratitude

It is a cold day here in my hometown, 14 Degrees and clear. It is one of those fine crisp November mornings I have grown up with.
My roommate is asleep in my office effectively stopping my working on websites.  The day has nothing on the books.  This morning first thing I prayed and meditated to know God's will and to follow it and right now, I have nothing to do.  I thought it would be good to review my gratitude list.  I am kind of restless and I don't know where that comes from.
I am coming up on 35 years sober on the 30th, 3 days from now, and that is amazing.  Sobriety has given me gifts, day by day, week by week, month by month and year by year.  I have a time trying to appreciate the people who chose to go back to using drugs and alcohol because I see no benefit in it and just an amazing amount of harm.  I man I care about uses and then cries when he uses because he gets so depressed.  That I do not understand.  35 years ago I determined I wanted no further harm from drugs and alcohol and determined that I would do whatever it takes to not use.  I regularly go to many meetings and have a super support system and regularly reach out to those who still suffer with dependency.  It is the way of my life.  It is really very simple, following God's will day by day.  I do not do it perfectly but that does not flag my daily and hourly and minute by minute focus on doing just that.
I also have the great privilege of playing violin every week.  That is a kick and I do it most often right now at Kwanzaa Community Church. I also enhance my walk with God at the services there led by Pastors Ralph and Alika Galloway.  I am so blessed.

Still a Lover and a Doubter

I am committed to "waging love toward all mankind" because I believe that about 2000 years ago Christ suggested that was the only way to go.  And I have doubts about God.  Yet were I not a follow of Christ's ways and teachings, I see no other viable alternatives that sit well with my deepest longings.

I believe and live in the path of Christ's ways.  I pray.  I love.

Waiting for Santa or the Easter Bunny

I enjoy work with and for Steven Berg, the creator, owner and heart of StevenBe and The Yarn Garage. I am a proud member of the Mounds View High School Alumni Reunion Choir.  I am an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and weekly play violin on the music team at Kwanzaa Community Church.  I am very active in 12 Step program.  I work with Dennis Johnston and Associates dealing with offenders.  I have a small home business of building and maintaining websites.  All in all, I am pretty busy.

Today I have been reflecting on how many people I know are "waiting for something to happen" to make changes or do things in their lives.  That just is not the way it is for me.  I have to "be the change". I have to take the risk, I have to risk following the Holy Spirit in my day to day life.  Waiting for something does not work in my life.

Is there are rock large enough?

Is there a rock large enough?

Heard some great things in a meeting.  I can remember that for me not to drink was impossible and I felt that I could just not get the program.  Hank changed all that by challenging me to quit depending upon my selfwill and start DOING the things that the program suggested day by day.  I did that and lo and behold, even without a loving God in my life, I stayed sober.  Whenever I weakened I contacted program folks and followed their directions.
The story that I heard in a meeting was just like I used to feel.  A guy called his sponsor and told the sponsor that he just couldn't follow the program anymore.  He just wanted to hide under a rock.  His sponsor said, "Is there a rock large enough?"  No there is not.  I used to be so full of myself and full of self pity when life on life's terms hit, my inflated ego and low self esteem just caused me to want to go and hide.  I could not and luckily for me, I did not try to hide under a bottle.
Now whenever my self centered, self pity comes crashing out of the gates, I know to contact my sponsor, hang out with program people, do some service work, get buzy and get doing.  Self pity and self loathing be damned, it is all selfish self centeredness out of resentments and fear and has no place in my life.  Thanks to all of you who have helped me discover this.

I am kind of in a strange place.  What with no guests here, and what with friends doing well and involved in their own lives, and having little to do on the web, I am kind of rattling about the condo.  I am not complaining, it is just different.  It is very relaxing.  I am sure that God will have more things for me to do really soon so I am just going to enjoy this.
